Kegel balls and weights

A smooth internal weight, or two linked together, with a cord or loop that stays outside for easy removal. You hold it in place and squeeze around it, which gives your pelvic floor something to work against so you can feel the movement happening. Sessions are short, and you can wear it sitting still or while you're moving about, whichever you prefer. Body-safe silicone is the usual material here, with no seams to catch and nothing porous to hold onto bacteria.

Lighter sets

Less weight to hold, which makes them the comfortable place to start if you've not used one before, or on a day when a heavier ball feels like too much. Comfort is the whole test. If you're clenching to keep it in, it's heavier than you want.

Heavier sets

More resistance for the same squeeze. Some sets arrive with a couple of weights so you can swap between them depending on how you feel, and swapping down is as normal as swapping up. Treat it as a size preference, the same way you'd pick any other fit.

• Weight: Lighter. How it feels: Easy to hold without clenching. Good when: You're new to it or you want a short, low-effort session.
• Weight: Heavier. How it feels: More to squeeze against. Good when: A lighter weight no longer asks anything of you.

What does a Kegel exerciser do?

It gives your pelvic-floor muscles something to squeeze against, so you can feel whether the squeeze is actually happening.

You insert it, hold it in place and contract around it in short bursts, releasing fully between each one. The weight is your feedback. With nothing to grip, a pelvic-floor squeeze is easy to fumble or to do with your stomach and thighs. Practising the squeeze is the whole of what these are for here. Does Kegel exerciser actually work?

As a way to practise the squeeze, yes. That's the only claim being made here.

Holding a weight and squeezing around it tells you the muscle is engaging, and doing it regularly is easier when you can feel something. What it does beyond that depends on you and on why you started, and it isn't something a shop can promise you. This isn't medical advice. What should I look for in a Kegel exerciser?

A weight you can hold without straining, and a retrieval cord you can reach.

• Smooth all over, with no seam or ridge you can feel.
• A weight that stays put without you clenching. If holding it is hard work from the first minute, go lighter.
• A set with more than one weight, if you'd like the option to change later.
• No crevices to clean around. Warm water and a mild unscented soap should be all it needs.

Comfort is the thing to judge it on. A weight you're happy to wear is the one you'll keep using, and a lighter set is never a step backwards.
